Given that today is the start of Lent - a time of reflection - let’s think back to that fateful World Cup cricket semi-final against England. ::eyes mist up slightly::

From Graeme: For those, like me, who have to resort to watching Aus vs NZ by Internet and seeing the text commentary, I thought you might appreciate this little gem:

30.1 Voges to McMillan, no run, fired in on middle and leg, he drives back to Voges

30.2 Voges to McMillan, SIX, I’m counting each one for you, and thats 23 sixes today! What a hit on this small ground! McMillian sashays down the track and clubs that over long-on for a big six!

30.3 Voges to McMillan, SIX, HOLY CRAP, thats out of the stadium! Superb hitting, its like a baseball home run derby! McMillan dances down and lifts Voges miles over the sight screen….24 sixes in the game and McMillan celebrates his 100 with a fiesty pump of the fist….immense innings!

Euro-English

27Sep06

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as “Euro-English”.

Yes, that’s right - an Apple store is opening at Clearwater Mall and in the tradition of Apple Store openings worldwide I’m going to camp overnight waiting for the grand opening. You’re welcome to join me! Will probably go through around 10 at night, and will be taking a few things with me:

  • frying pan
  • bacon and eggs
  • paper plate
  • orange juice
  • sleeping bag and pillow
  • beanie
  • my MacBook Pro (so if you’re going to rob me, this would be a good time)

What a great birthday party idea!!

“…we have our fair share of detractors who confidently predict that we will fail to host a successful World Cup.

“Many detractors are indeed destructive racists, who don’t believe South Africa has the organisational ability to pull it off,” says Moneyweb’s David Carte. “This confers on the organisation an enormous duty to prove them wrong. Get this right and you can negate the bitching of a million naysayers, many of them embittered emigrants.”

A world free of the drone of whining ex-South Africans? That sounds like reason enough to host a successful World Cup!

We have already proved the naysayers wrong during our transition to democracy. The 2010 World Cup provides us yet another opportunity to prove them wrong. Can you imagine the satisfaction and pride we will feel after we successfully host the most successful, most vibrant, most ALIVE event in the tournament’s history? We can and we will. But we need all need to take responsibility for communicating positively, consistently and honestly about our challenges and, perhaps more importantly, our successes.

“We are collectively responsible for the future we create,” says Johnston. “What sort of future South Africa do you want to live in? What can YOU do to create a future that is Alive with Possibility?”

Festival time!

10Aug06

I’m at Soul Survivor, a youth worship festival at Shepton Mallet (!) close to Bath. We passed Stonehenge on the way - really random to be driving along and then Stonehenge suddenly appears. There are about 12000 people here, all camping - the closest I’ve ever been to something like this is the Newsong Festival (so I wore my Newsong shirt in honour of that occassion - kudos to Brett Fish!). My friend Matt Tinsley is playing bass in the worship team (which also means he’ll probably be on the annual Soul Survivor live worship cd, which is great for him). The joint sessions are in a tent (!) with a very clear sound setup and enough multimedia equipment to make me feel quite dizzy, having run production for Change Agents a few weeks back.
